Final Project (Old Town)

For our final project, the class will be working together to make an old European town. I was tasked with making some objects for the graveyard. Below is what I will be bringing tomorrow to add to the group scene. I'm really looking forward to seeing how a group of modelers work together to add their creations into a cohesive scene. Let me know what you think of my graveyard. I'll be sure to post the final scene and the fly-through as soon as they're completed.

Particle systems - Fire, Ash and Foam.

This isn't complete. I wasn't able to get any animations saved, key frames won't work, and the whole reactor thing. The picture I have here is just to show where I'm at now so when you see what I have tomorrow you'll see where I was going with it. Here I have some "sparks" coming up out of the fire and "ash" falling down. There is a gravity force in place that effects the sparks and ash. The green "foam" coming out of FSR-X's nozzles are just meta particles. My intention will be to have them impact a wall that is on fire and gravity will cause the foam to slowly drip down.

If I can get key frames and an animation to work, I'll have FSR-X traverse his nozzles from right to left leaving a dripping trail of foam on the wall. There will also be a wave deformation that will move through the fire, hopefully bring some life to the otherwise static "flames".

Stay tuned...

Creepy Hand! (totally awesome!)

I'm pretty pleased with the outcome of this hand project. My intention was to make a monster hand (like a werewolf) and I think it turned out well. I couldn't find a good texture for a wolf-man or vampire hand, but I did find a cool "monster skin" texture. The nails are a horn texture that I already had. I had some trouble getting the texture applied perfectly, you may see some issues in some of the shots, but overall I really like it. It looks like a zombie or ghoul hand (or an ogre hand according to my daughter). Let me know what you think!

This is my favorite shot.

I added a mirror for these last few shots.

Organic Modeling - Hand

This week we went from the industrial and mechanical modeling of the snowspeeder to the organic modeling for a hand. Definitely very cool and a lot of fun, but much harder to get looking right. A lot more tweaking is needed to refine the object. The snowspeeder was a lot of straight lines and primitive shapes. A hand.... well, it's more difficult.

Below are a few shots of the hand I'm trying to make. It's not nearly done. I'm trying to make a werewolf/witch looking hand. Would have been cooler if it was finished for Halloween, but oh well.

Rebel Snowspeeder

Here is my snowspeeder after more work, texture and a couple lights that didn't want to cooperate. It's not the normal color scheme, but I do have in my hand a Star Wars Action Fleet snowspeeder from 1995 that inspired my model. Obviously more detail can be added to this craft, but this is as far as I've gotten with it.

Editable Poly - Snowspeeder!

I really like the editable poly mode. Taking a box and molding it into a wing or a cylinder and beveling it into a blaster cannon, so many cool things you can do. Below are a couple renders of the first stage of my creation of a Snowspeeder model. This first one is very basic. Just the core shapes and parts. Next I'll add details to the polys and faces, including panels, etchings and windows on the cockpit. Then I'll map and light the scene.

Playing with Fire

This wasn't exactly for an assignment. I just got home from class and wanted to mess around with the program some more.

Lathe and Loft (the return of FSR-X)

For this exercise we were to make a few lathed and a few lofted objects and place them in the ammo room scene, or if you were sick of it, you could create a whole new scene.

I created a castle wall and keep around the ammo room building.

I changed some of the external lights, trying to present a
3-pt lighting style.

OMG! Is that a snake??

Yep... it's a snake. Good job terrorist dude, you left the
door open.
I created a trophy (at my brother's request) for our
fantasy football league.

FSR-X is trying out a new security guard sub-routine.

Ammo Room Lighting

I was absent last class, but here is the lighting assignment anyway. You can see in my previous post that I did a little practicing before I jumped back into the Ammo Room scene. It made placing and modifying the light sources a lot easier.

Here is the wide camera. I later decided to add glossy floors.

Corner shot with glossy floors. I love the window light
and the shadows of the bars on the poster.

This is the close-up shot. The window light gives the
impression that it's dawn.

This shot shows some reflected light on the ceiling.

Here is my attempt at 3-point lighting. I selected the
grenade for my object of focus. I'm sure with more
practice I can get better results.

Final shot of my version of the Ammo Room. I really enjoyed
this project and I'm generally pleased with the results.

Practice Lighting with FSR-X

Here are some renders from my primitive robot with some lights added. I did this just as practice for my next assignment.

Ammo Room!!

Well I'd explain what's going on in my Ammo Room... but I wouldn't want to tip off any members of a particular sports team... who I hate and who suck and who the Giants will thoroughly thrash. Ahem... anyway. I had fun mapping this room. Once I got going, I just wanted to do more and more. My one sticky part was on the top of the matchbox. I couldn't figure out how to turn the image on that one, even though I did turn other images. Hope you like it! Except you Philly fans... you can suck it. =P

Logo

I'm pretty proud of this logo. It's late and it's primitive, but I really like it. It's not perfect, mind you, but I'll get it there eventually. I would like to have the 'b' in Brady be part of, or come out of, the light bulb. Until I learn a technique to accomplish that, I'll keep working at it and use this as my logo.

I want to thank two people for their help with this project: my wife, who sat and brainstormed with me and was kind enough to say she likes the results, despite it not being exactly how she'd like it. And I'd like to thank Fabian, who got me started on the lightbulb by showing me some awesome techniques in class.

Primitive Robot

Introducing FSR-X (Fire Suppression and Rescue - Experimental). Designed to go where human rescue and fire fighting units cannot. Chemical fires, explosive munitions, and intense heat are no problem for the FSR-X. Armed with multiple chemical suppressents, numerous sensors and incredible mechanical strength, this robot can go where we can't go, see what we can't see and move what we can't move.

[My first ever creation in 3DS Max.]
